Recommended first aid kit for UK summer holidays

Please remember to always read the leaflet of any medicine before using it.

First aid dressings:

Gauze squares, non-sticky dressing, bandage, fabric plasters, adhesive tape, scissors, tweezers and safety pins.

Antiseptic wipes, dry powder or spray:

Use for cuts and grazes.

Aftersun lotion or spray:

For sunburn.

Sunscreen, sunblock and lip cream:

Take total block for sensitive areas plus products with minimum SPF15. Don't forget children require greater sun protection.

Calamine lotion:

For sunburn, skin irritation, relief from insect bites.

Painkillers:

Use to reduce high temperature, pain and inflammation. Make sure you have products suitable for adults and children: Paracetamol, aspirin (not for children under 16), ibuprofen or other infant formula for children and babies.

Thermometer or thermometer strips:

Particularly useful for young children

Anti-diarrhoeals:

For management of diarrhoea - but not recommended for young children or the frail elderly . Anti-diarrhoeals such as IMODIUM® capsules and IMODIUM® Instants provide effective relief with an excellent safety profile. IMODIUM® Plus also contains simethicone as well as loperamide and helps relieve cramping pains, bloating and wind often associated with diarrhoea. Always read the leaflet.

Anti-fungals:

Anti-fungal sprays are ideal for footwear, (e.g. DAKTARIN® Dual Action spray powder). Anti-fungal creams such as DAKTARIN® Gold or DAKTARIN® Cream are recommended to treat infected skin areas.

DAKTARIN® Dual Action Spray Powder and DAKTARIN® Cream contain miconazole nitrate. DAKTARIN® Gold contains ketoconazole. Always read the leaflet. Ask your pharmacist for advice.

Antihistamines:

Usually available as tablets and cream and useful for allergic reactions or itching from insect bites. Take those without a sedative effect if you need to drive or be alert and avoid alcohol.

Insect repellent:

The most effective repellents contain DEET. Use a lotion, spray or roll-on containing at least 30% DEET, or 50% in areas with large numbers of biting insects. Be aware that DEET may damage some plastics and fabrics. Some alternatives to DEET contain natural oils such as citronella but may be less effective.

Travel sickness tablets:

Take before the journey as directed on pack (e.g. Stugeron15 which contains cinnarizine). Not all are suitable for children. Always read the leaflet.

Indigestion Remedy:

Choose one that can give effective and long lasting relief. (e.g Pepcidtwo® chewable tablets that get to work in 2 minutes and just one tablet gives up to 12 hours relief. Always read the leaflet).

Personal medication:

Pack sufficient supplies of prescription or regular medication.

Contraception:

Buy condoms with a quality mark and store them in a dry cool place. If you are taking an oral contraceptive ensure you have enough to cover you for the duration of the trip.
